On the night of May 25-26, armed supporters of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) began an operation to seize Donetsk Airport. The inner perimeter of the airport was guarded by units of the 3rd special forces regiment (Kirovograd). Most of the soldiers of the Ukrainian Army holding the new terminal either died under the rubble or were taken prisoner. During 2015, debris was cleared at the airport, as a result of which 373 bodies of soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were found. The total number of losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is about 600 soldiers killed, 44 soldiers were captured. The Ukrainian army officially recognized only 200 killed and about 500 wounded. The losses on the part of the DPR are not known, the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced about 800 killed militias.
