The structures of abstract algebra appear over and over again in the real world from the simple addition of numbers and string concatenation to modular architectural patterns for large enterprise systems and beyond. The best part about these abstractions is that we can leverage the simpler examples to begin building an intuition for the larger examples. So what are magmas? Other than alliteration, what do they have in common with monoids?
