China celebrates Hungry Ghost Festival The holiday is celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, which in 2024 corresponds to August 18. In a way, it is the Chinese equivalent of the Celtic festival of Halloween. Since ancient times, people in China have believed that on this day, the curtain separating the realm of the living from the afterlife disappears, and the souls of the dead enter our world. One of the festival’s customs is the burning of imitation banknotes, as well as papier-mache copies of valuable items and jewelry.
