The scene opens with a man, Giles, (Franklin Dyall?), playing the grand piano in an elaborate style in a drawing room; another man, George (Ivo Dawson?), enters. They chat for a bit and we learn that Giles is writing a new book in which he will “prove conclusively that even the limitations of a worm can be expended by intelligence“. George seems a bit dense. Athene Seyler as George's wife enters, and talks of how all her friends love hearing about her celebrated cousin. She relates the newspaper stories of Giles' wife being his “great helpmate and stimulus“ and wonders what she stimulates, considering the couple have separate bedrooms and one little bed in each.
