Vatican on Saturday (December 9) lit up its famed Christmas tree in St. Peter's Square and unveiled this year's Nativity scene. The nativity scene featured life-sized terracotta statues depicting also St. Francis of Assisi and was inspired by the first living Nativity scene created 800 years ago by St. Francis in 1223. The 28-metre-tall spruce donated by the northern city of Cuneo was decorated with thousands of nursery-grown edelweiss, a white mountain flower native to the Alps. The tree had to be felled because it was at risk of collapse and according to Alberto Cirio, the President of the Piedmont Region, after the Christmas season it will be sent to a company that will turn it into toys for children in need. ........................................................................................
