Late model vehicles can be difficult to custom tune, and as a shop wanting to get ahead of the competition on a new model, how is it possible without huge amounts of R&D? At the latest Supra Equipment Manufacturers Association meeting, aka The SEMA Show, we take a look at the A90 Toyota Supra for this scenario. Reading the data from an ECU and then writing the adjusted data back to it (your 'tune') is only part of the puzzle, as the data comes out in a raw, binary format which is unique to the ECU, essentially making it a code that needs to be cracked. You can use software like WinOLS to define tables/maps within this code, however, to do this you also need to know where they are, which requires insider knowledge or some specialist tools and the knowledge of how to use them. Both options mentioned will generally being out of reach of 95% of us out there.
