Former Italian PM Giuliano Amato has claimed that France was behind the downing of Ittavia 870 passenger jet in 1980. Amato said Paris gave the order to shoot down the Italian passenger jet in a bid to kill Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 1980. Amato also claimed that Gaddafi was tipped off in the final minutes by late Italian Socialist Party leader Bettino Craxi, a former Italian PM. Amato has called on French President Emmanuel Macron to respond to the claim. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni responded to Amato’s comments, saying her predecessor’s claims “deserve attention”.
