On the morning of February 9, a strong earthquake occurred in Hawaii. Officials initially estimated the magnitude of the quake at 6.3, but later lowered it to 5.7. The epicenter was in the ocean, at a depth of 37 km. There is no threat of a tsunami. Hundreds of people reported on specialized websites that they felt shaking. The earthquake occurred against a background of increased seismic activity associated with the Kilauea volcano. There were also at least eight aftershocks. There were no reports of casualties or damage.
