(Turn on Youtube subtitles for English subtitles) The Kaiserhymne was the imperial anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The hymn was originally “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser“ and written as a personal anthem to Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire, and later of the Austrian Empire. The lyrics were written by Lorenz Leopold Haschka and the melody by Joseph Haydn in 1797. In 1854, the anthem got new lyrics, which were used until the end of the Empire in 1918. The anthem has the same melody as the German national anthem “Deutschlandlied“, written in 1841.
