Typhoon Gaemi has struck the Chinese coast, prompting warnings of sudden flooding. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated following warnings of river overflows and flash floods in several provinces. Typhoon Gaemi reached southeastern China after passing through the Taiwan Strait. It is the third and most powerful typhoon to hit China’s eastern coast this year. The typhoon made landfall in Fujian province. Wind gusts reached up to 240 kilometers per hour, some of the strongest recorded in the western Pacific. Before its arrival, 250,000 people were evacuated from Fujian. Gaemi and its massive storm bands are forecasted to bring heavy rains to at least 10 Chinese provinces in the coming days. Gaemi's impact is being compared to last year’s Typhoon Doksuri, which caused unprecedented flooding as far north as Beijing. Doksuri inflicted damage across the country amounting to about $30 billion. Authorities have stated that water levels in the lower Yangtze River could rise to dangerous levels. Beijing has warned that Gaemi’s high moisture content could result in heavy rainfall in the Chinese capital. Officials have cautioned that Gaemi’s rains could lead to sudden flooding and waterlogging in northern China. Earlier this week, Gaemi intensified seasonal rains in the Philippines. The oil tanker MT Terra Nova, carrying about 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil, sank off the coast of Bataan province. In some parts of southern Taiwan, rainfall is expected to reach 2200 mm. #flood #news #china #taiwan #philippines #gaemi #storm #hurricane A natural disaster is a serious adverse event caused by natural processes on Earth; Examples include floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, rain, hail, wildfires, waves, wind, snow, weather, and other geological processes.
