When Arthur Honegger (who appears at the top of the photo, towards the middle) met Dmitri Shostakovich (at the bottom, on the left) in 1928 in Leningrad, he couldn’t imagine that this young, shy, and very gifted Russian composer would transcribe for two pianos, 19 years later, his future Third Symphony (’Symphonie liturgique’). And yet, Shostakovich did the job towards 1947, for his students, not very long before he was dismissed for ideological reasons (1948) from his post as a professor at the Leningrad Conservatoire of Music. The three movements of the work are: [00:08] Dies Irae: Allegro marcato; [07:05] De profundis clamavi: Adagio; [18:38] Dona nobis pacem: Andante.
