The performing practices preserved on the early twentieth-century recordings are rarely used today. The most striking examples of these changes are found in the treatment of rhythm and tempo from the beginning to the end of the century (Peres da Costa, 2012; Philip, 2004). Practices such as unnotated arpeggiation, playing one hand after the other, and rhythmic flexibility, characterise the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Have a listen to recordings of Leschetizky, Paderewski, Saint-Saëns, Busoni, Carreño and others! :)
