A female Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri is demonstrating the effectiveness of her bill as a secateur-like tool. She is shown here snipping off the male catkins from a Sallow Salix sp. tree, holding them in one of her feet (which she is using like a hand), selecting the tastiest parts and then discarding the remainder. A few days earlier the photographer had observed another one of these intelligent birds doing precisely the same thing with Horse Chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum buds.
