In a statement Monday, the U.S. said it expresses its “official condolences“ for the death of Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, and other members of their delegation. It added that as Iran selects a new president, the U.S. reaffirms its support for “the Iranian people and their struggle for human rights and fundamental freedoms.“ State media reported that the leader was found dead this week at at the site of a helicopter crash after an hours-long search through a foggy, mountainous region of the country’s northwest.
