During the Second World War, there were many different people inside of different armies who decided to desert and flee the battlefield. As the war was turning against the Germans, many members of the Army and the armed forces turned against Hitler and the government and went AWOL. Desertion within Germany was considered the worst military crime as the German population had been brainwashed into thinking that the only way was Hitler's way. It's estimated that around 15,000 members of the German Army, Navy and Air Force were executed during the conflict by guillotine or firing squad for desertion. The executions for desertion even continued after the end of the Second World War, as inside of a POW camp Canadian Officials allowed two German sailors to be tried by other German POWs by court martial. The war was over in Europe, and 5 days after the surrender of the German Armed Forces to the Allies, these two men were executed by a firing squad.
