Benny Carter’s Quartet featuring the legendary pianist Hank Jones is captured in an inspired 1973 concert at Princeton University. The musical and personal links were very deep for this particular concert, as Carter had first recorded with bassist Milt Hinton as far back as 1938, and with Hank Jones in 1952. These two were both part of what was known as the New York Rhythm Section in the 1950s and ‘60s, based on their ability to deal with any kind of musical challenge in any kind of musical situation. Given Carter’s sensitivity to his accompaniment, this duo, along with the young drummer Ron Zito, provided just the musical magic carpet he loved, and the results are audible on every track.
