Shonai Sashiko is a traditional stitch technique from the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture, north west Japan. Intricate patterns are formed by straight lines of running stitch crossing and intersecting. It was originally a recycling technique, stitched through two or more layers of fabric, for work clothes and household textiles.
