In this video, watch a performance of Mozart’s Grande sestetto concertante in E-flat Major, after , III. Presto, as performed by Tafelmusik. A master of classical music, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s masterful Sinfonia concertante, , composed the year before, was heavily influenced by his visits to Paris—where the sinfonie concertante was all the rage—and Mannheim, where the virtuoso orchestra was known for its dramatic dynamic effects. The work was anonymously transcribed for string sextet in 1808, a practice quite common at the time, when there was great demand for domestic versions of large-scale works. This arrangement features not just the original solo violin and viola, but spreads the melodic material among five of the six instruments, even in Mozart’s original cadenzas. The ebullient Presto finale brings moments of virtuosity to the spirit of the contredanse.
