“Last Orders“ is a novel by Graham Swift, published in 1996. The novel won the Booker Prize in the same year and was adapted into a film in 2001. The novel is set in London and centers around four friends who gather to fulfill the last wishes of their friend Jack Dodds, who has recently passed away. Jack’s last request was for his ashes to be scattered in the sea at Margate, a seaside town in southeastern England. As the friends set off on their journey, they reminisce about their shared past, their relationships with Jack, and their own personal struggles and triumphs. As the novel unfolds, we learn more about Jack’s life and the relationships he had with each of his friends. We also witness the impact that Jack’s death has on each of the characters and how they come to terms with their own mortality. Through its themes of friendship, loyalty, and the passing of time, “Last Orders“ offers a poignant and deeply moving meditation on life, death, and the human condition.
