NEW Yorkers have been left in shock after a brief power outage plunged Times Square and other areas of the city into darkness. The second-long power blackout was reported by residents in several Boroughs of New York City. The electricity went out for a second, came back on, then flickered again. The cause of the outage is unclear, but one social media user shared a video and said something appeared to “explode“ at a Con Edison facility in Brooklyn. “Looks like something small exploded at the ConEd plant in Brooklyn, sending a small fireball and smoke into the air, and causing a momentary NYC power outage,“ Sean Scott wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. Con Edison is an energy company that provides electric and gas services to New York City. The video showed smoke billowing from the city lights beaming across the East River. Another video showed police lights near the plant, indicating that cops were on the scene investigating. The U.S. Sun reached out to Con Edison, and a spokesperson said they would get back with more information. The Con Edison outage map showed only a few hundred residents without power as of 12:30 am. Residents quickly took to X to share their confusion and concern about the split second outage. “Holy sh*t all of New York City just had a power outage at the same time,“ one person wrote. “NYC. everyone else’s power just go out for a second?“ another asked. “And then the power goes out in Times Square for a second. Wtf,“ a third person said. Outage reports poured in from across boroughs, with Brooklyn, Upper East Side, Midtown, Queens, the Bronx, and many other neighborhoods wondering what the blackout was all about. Others said they were having issues with their WiFi after the split second outage. “New York City power outage at 11:57PM, and then at 12:00A - lights still working but wifi is down,“ one social media user wrote. Tourists visiting the city during its busy holiday season also shared their stories about what happened during the outage. One person said the trains appeared to be delayed after the blackout, leaving her stuck at the Times Square station.
