Quick and simple guide to remembering ship light combinations as per the IRPCS or COLREGS. We present a simplified way of remembering the various lights that are shown by ships, boats and yachts to indicate to other vessels information about heading and vessel type. A single red or green light will most likely be the sidelight - and in the simplest form this means that the vessel is underway and gives an indication of which side of the vessel you are looking at. More red lights that you see, the more you should stay away If in doubt, head for the dark parts of the horizon - if it I safe to do so!
