Dennis Rodman’s Dunk Breaks the Rim (Temporarily) After Isiah Thomas Pinpoint Dime May 8, 1990 - Many (but not all) breakaway rims of the late 80’s and early 90’s featured an idiosyncrasy that led to the rims becoming stuck in the “breakaway“ position following particularly emphatic dunks. Here, it was a Dennis Rodman dunk coming early in his team’s 112-77 playoff win over the New York Knicks that led to a temporary stoppage while the ball boy popped the rim back into position by literally throwing a basketball at the rim from below.
