OMELETO ON SOCIAL Instagram: Twitter: Facebook: Beth is an insecure twenty-something constantly tethered to her phone. Obsessed with getting likes, she's always perfecting her poses, doing her makeup, and taking endless selfies. In their shared quest for social media attention, her friend Micah shares a new filter with her, one that transforms Beth from “cute“ to “gorgeous“ with some digital magic. The filter works all too well, increasing Beth's social media engagement, comments and likes and getting the attention of a new suitor. But the filter exacts a price for its magic, shackling Beth to something much darker and more insidious. Directed and written by Nathan Crooker, this luridly intriguing horror-thriller short is a sharp, pointed cautionary tale about the illusion of perfection and prioritizing social media images over lived realities. Beth and her peers hole up in their rooms, taking pictures of themselves, editing them to a glossy ideal, posting them and using them as a springboard for interaction and validation. But the film's roller-coaster of a plot details the limitations of equating self-worth and happiness with social media success, to memorable and horrifying effect. The film has a high-toned, super-saturated look, bathed in dreamy, surreal light and colors evoking a nightclub vibe. Edited with the snap and dynamism of a music video, the visuals underscore how Beth lives surrounded by a highly mediated reality, removed from the outside world. But when she downloads the filter and uses it, she becomes part of that world, getting tons of attention on her socials. But strange things also begin happening to her face, making her dependent on the filter for posting. Strange things also begin happening to her personality as she takes on a new persona, especially as someone slides into her DMs. Actor Kelly Lamor Wilson portrays the normal girl-next-door that Beth begins as, as well as the slide into the more calculated, cunning creature that the filter brings out in her. The filter gives the appearance of beauty but brings out an inner ugliness and fear -- one that Beth may not be able to escape from. Contemporary in spirit and engaging throughout, “Nofilter“ has an intriguing premise that's perfect for this media age, where online presences have sometimes superseded actual character, accomplishments or IRL relationships. The suspenseful narrative gets at the Faustian pact that living in such a psychological hall of mirrors can result in, peaking sometimes into body dysmorphia or just a general ugliness of character when people don't have to suffer the immediate consequences of their action. We're beautiful on our screens, but inside we're losing connection to a true sense of our beauty, making us dependent on outside input to feel good about ourselves.
