No Time for Comedy 1940. James Stewart, Rosalind Russell, Genevieve Tobin, Charles Ruggles, Louise Beavers, Allyn Joslyn Small-town writer Gaylord Esterbrook (James Stewart) makes it on Broadway when he writes a humorous play about wealthy socialites. There, he eventually marries the play’s star, Linda Paige (Rosalind Russell), and pens several more popular comedies. However, things change drastically for Gaylord when he meets upper-class seductress Amanda Swift (Genevieve Tobin). Amanda convinces him to write a more serious production and leave Linda, but Gaylord quickly comes to regret both decisions.
