TO TAKE THE STING OUT OF STH ENG: if something takes the sting out of an unpleasant situation, it makes it less unpleasant. TO SWEETEN (UP) THE DEAL/POT ENG: to make something more enticing, alluring, or attractive, especially from a financial perspective. Imagine someone trying to sway you to accept their offer but miserably fail in their endeavor. You just flat out refuse. But they are not easily discouraged and find a way to reel you in by sweetening the deal/pot. Or maybe something bothers you and they take the sting out of an unpleasant situation you found yourself in. Let’s say your boss asked you to work on a project over the weekend. If slogging away is not something you like doing on a hard-earned weekend, you will let your boss know, “Sorry, boss. No can do.” But your boss won’t take no for an answer and sweetens the deal by generously compensating you for your time and effort. That could probably get you to rethink the offer.
