Sprinting is a brilliant tool for losing weight, building muscle, increasing athleticism, and developing a skill that you might genuinely someday need. You may have seen pictures showing the impressive physiques of sprinters. We are told that this is because sprinting produces large amounts of anabolic hormones such as growth hormone and testosterone. One study even suggested that sprinting could peak growth hormone by as much as 2000%! There are caveats here (see the video) but it’s undeniably impressive. So, why does this happen? Simply: sprinting is an exercise that allows you to maintain maximum effort while training a huge proportion of the body. Sprinting trains the legs, yes, but also the core, the shoulders, the pecs, the biceps, the triceps, and more! It is TRULY compound. This not only translates to athleticism across the board, it not only burns a huge amount of calories; it also triggers that aforementioned spike in hormones. What other exercise lets you go THIS hard, this long, without any equipment? And, of course, sprinting is a hugely functional movement pattern in itself.
