This adobe brick kiln works well to fire pottery. I recently made this large cooking pot from clay sourced in the pit next to my hut. I also made a flat cooking plate known in Mexico as a 'comal'. The process for firing this pottery is simple. 1) I place some wood and kindling in the kiln. 2) Then I light it with hot coals collected from the fireplace in my hut. 3) I allow all the wood to burn down. 4) Then I push the coals and ash away from the middle and place two bricks in the center of the kiln. 5) I place the pot upside down on the bricks and lean the lid and the 'comal' against the pot. 6) I stack dry branches of wood all around the pottery. 7) The hot coals will slowly catch fire and soon all the wood will be engulfed in flames. 8) The fire will burn for about 20 minutes. 9) A few hours after the fire burns out the pottery can be removed from the kiln.
