Robert “Sonny” Green was born in Monroe Louisiana in 1941. He started singing when he was a teenager in his native Louisiana, but lived a long time in Los Angeles, where he has performed regularly for over 40 years. At eighteen, Sonny Green was hired by saxophonist Big Jay McNeely, who had the 1959 single “There is Something On Your Mind“ sung by Little Sonny Warner. As a replacement for Warner, Green was nicknamed “Sonny“ to make people think he was the original. Later, while touring with Tyrone Davis, Green moved to Texas and then to Los Angeles. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Green recorded eight singles (a total of fifteen sides) for several labels, mainly those of producer Matt Hill. Hill's biggest star was his brother Arzel, better known as Z.Z. Hill, but Green scored “It’s A Game“ from 1969. Over the years, Green continued to perform. It is pure coincidence that we should hear the best soul singer you have never heard of after the title of Johnny Rawls' latest
