With this post, we start a new series of posts we called #DNA. The idea is to share with you some works of popular art that literally form the DNA of the 40 generation of Russians (to which most of our team in Russia belongs). We hope this series will help us understand each other better. The “Ballad of Struggle,” which we’d like to share with you today, was written in mid-1970s by the Soviet bard Vladimir Vysotsky, an iconic figure for anyone born and raised in the USSR. To us, this song reflects very precisely the essence of the events in today’s Russia. The generation, raised in a world that has only known war through books, has managed to recognise Evil, dressed up in noble clothes, yet spreading Death around it. Well, we have our father’s old sword with us… Interestingly, Vysotsky wrote this song, among others, for a film about Robin Hood, but not all of his works made it into the movie. However, those “redundant” songs lent themselves perfectly to the events in another movie: The Ballad of the Valiant Knight Ivanhoe filmed in early 1980s, inspired by Walter Scott’s famous novel. In the video, Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, and his people are storming the castle where Bois-Guilbert, the main villain, holds prisoners. We know we have some Russians among our subscribers.
