On Friday morning, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula. Tremors were also felt in the Greek capital, Athens, and on the southern island of Crete. The earthquake occurred at 09:12 local time. The epicenter was in the Ionian Sea at a depth of 29 kilometers. Aftershocks were later recorded. There is no threat of a tsunami. On social networks, eyewitnesses share footage of the natural disaster. Some people ran out into the street. Several buildings were reported to have received minor damage. Rescue teams were sent to the affected areas. There is no official information about the destruction and casualties yet. Aftershocks are likely in the coming days. The Peloponnese is a peninsula in Greece, the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula, connected to it by the Isthmus of Corinth. The area of the peninsula is about 21,500 square kilometers. It is washed by the waters of the Ionian and Aegean seas and their bays. Extreme weather continues to impact China. Heavy rains hit the southwestern provinces of the country. More than 170 millimeters of rain per square meter fell in Sichuan province.
