We have been working through a situation with our latest batch of CPM MagnaCut blades. This has affected blades for the GSO-4.5 Standard, GSO-4.5 Bushcraft, GSO-5.1, V-4, EDC-2.7, EDC-4. This is a longer video so we have it broken up into segments: 00:00 – Now that we have some answers, we put together this video to share the details with you. 00:20 – The blades have experienced some light decarburization. 02:15 – Everyone has been learning a lot about this sensitive material and how to work with it in the future. 03:14 – The blades are still functionally good. The decarburization is shallow, though it did lead to additional issues with warping and twisting. 06:15 – These blades are not usable for existing preorders. Many of them will end up in the scrap pile and any that can be reworked into knives that meet our standards will be salvaged. 09:18 – Closer look at the issue. 11:05 – Our plan for the blades is to Cerakote them, covering up the ugliness created by this mishap. Many of the GSO-5.1 blades are now at a thinner .170” in thickness. The knives are still up to our standard functionally. 15:24 – For existing preorders, we have figured out where things went wrong and are working closely with Peters’ Heat Treat to make sure it does not happen again. We already have another batch of these blades ready to go to heat treating and plan to get them caught up so we can fulfill orders as quickly as possible. 15:36 – In the future we plan to narrow our focus to certain models and start working with additional steel options. 17:14 – If you have an existing preorder and like any of the reworked blades from this batch we are happy to change your order over to one of these. 18:05 – Guy’s surface grinding process to clean these parts up.
