Newcastle's form had improved dramatically going into this game following the appointment of Kevin Keegan as manager. Keegan had seen his team win 4 and draw 2 of his previous 8 games in charge and were looking good to beat the drop. In the same period, it appeared that sunderland's FA Cup run (they would lose the final to Liverpool) affected their league form with a return of 4 defeats and only 1 win in their previous 6 games. They too were now in a relegation battle. Both would just avoid the drop come the end of the season but Newcastle had the bragging rights in this one.
