The Congas are one of the key instruments in Salsa music as well as various other music genres. The rhythm is based on a consistent 8th note pattern, which for dancers introduces the &( ) counts in between the 8 numbers. Often spoken about among dancers and within dance circles, are two key sounds within the Conga rhythm: the “slap“ (2, 6) and the “open tones“ (4, 4 , 8, 8 ). Keep in mind that the conga player will play variations of this rhythm depending on the song, section of the music etc. and therefore you will hear a range of variations in different salsa recordings.
