DidYouKnow While not a true beaver, the mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa) is the most primitive living rodent and the sole living member of its family, Aplodontiidae. The Sierra Nevada mountain beaver is one of seven subspecies and lives in riparian habitats of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and elsewhere in the Sierra Nevada. These curious creatures are #rarelyseen, as they spend most of their time in the safety of their burrow systems. When foraging, mountain beaver create piles of plants, or “haystacks” outside of burrows in order for them to dry out and to keep from molding. Dried plants are then stored in food cache and nesting chambers underground as food for winter, as the mountain beaver does not hibernate.
