Videos and photos posted on social media show orange-red fountains of lava shooting into the dark night sky, brightly illuminating it. The eruption was preceded by an earthquake the day before, and authorities declared a state of emergency and evacuations from nearby areas, including the Blue Lagoon resort and spa area. This is the sixth eruption since December 2023, and was expected for several weeks due to ongoing seismic activity in the area. According to Benedikt Ofeigsson, a spokesman for the Icelandic Meteorological Service, the fissure in the ground from which the magma is flowing is 3.9 kilometers long. Moreover, the fissure itself increased by 1.5 km in 40 minutes, immediately after the eruption began. A group of scientists flew over the volcanic fissure in a helicopter to observe the dynamics of the eruption. The team says the fissure is about four kilometers long, one of the largest they have ever seen. The speed of volcanic lava is about 6 km/h, which is a high figure. It is noted that the intensity of this eruption is significantly higher than any previous eruptions this year. Just a few hours after the eruption began, the volcano had released twice as much lava as the last volcanic eruption in Iceland this summer.
