This week's collections short is focused on Ivory netsuke from Japan which are part of the Brassey Collection. Most of them feature a variety of animal carvings. Netsuke are small sculptural objects, originating from 17th century Japan, made from a variety of materials including wood, ivory, porcelain and other materials. At first glance, the netsuke seen at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery appear to function only as ornamental items, due to the way they are displayed. However, they were initially made to serve a practical purpose. #HastingsDigitalMuseum #Turtle #frog #Japan #Netsuke Music Credit: A new World -
