The “Shaler“ outcrop is dramatically layered, as seen in this mosaic of telephoto images from the right Mast Camera (Mastcam) on NASA's Mars rover Curiosity. In some portions of the outcrop, patterns in the layering provide evidence of stream flow. The images combined into this mosaic were taken between 12:34 and 1:00 p.m. local Mars solar time during the 120th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's surface operations (Dec. 7, 2012). The mosaic raw-color version shows what the rocks look like on Mars to the camera. The white-balanced version is also available, to show what the rocks would look like if they were on Earth. A raw-color version is also available, showing what the rocks look like on Mars to the camera. An excerpt from this mosaic provides an indication of scale.
