Brugmansia ( Common name: Angels' Trumpet, Datura Candida, Floripondio Tree) is a genus of seven species of flowering plants in the family Solanaceae. They are woody trees or shrubs, with pendulous flowers, and have no spines on their fruit. Their large, fragrant flowers give them their common name of angel's trumpets, a name sometimes used for the closely related genus Datura. (Datura differs from Brugmansia in that they are herbaceous bushes, with erect rather than pendulous flowers - and most have spines on their fruit). Angel's Trumpet is popular in Hawaii, where it was introduced in 1825 off the ship Blonde that arrived from Rio de Janeriro. It has quickly become one of their sacred flowers, which they call 'nanahonua,' meaning “gazing earthward.“ Hawaiians smoked the leaves, creating their own tradition of hallucinogenic ritual. It was used by the shamans, to help them gain entrance to other worlds of existance. People discovered its medicinal properties through shamans, or Medicine Men. .
