On Friday evening, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan. There was no tsunami warning. The epicenter was in the ocean at a depth of 45 kilometers, 14 kilometers east of the city of Togane. The tremors were strongly felt in the prefectures of Chiba and Ibaraki. There were no reports of damage. The earthquake was also felt by residents of the country's capital, Tokyo. Japan accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
