The small town of Green Bank, West Virginia only has a population of 143. But the town is famous for one strange quality-all wireless signals are illegal here. That means cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and radio are all prohibited in this town. The reason is because Green Bank is located in the center of the 13,000-square-foot National Radio Quiet Zone. This area was designated by the FCC in order to protect government radio telescopes from man-made interference. The town is home to the Green Bank Telescope, which is the largest steerable radio telescope in the world and may be the most “powerful link to the cosmos.“
