MADAYA / SYRIA — Less than an hour’s drive from Damascus, Syria is the mountain town of of Madaya where at least 23 people have died from starvation and hundreds more suffer from malnutrition. Local residents say their town has been under siege by members of Bashar al-Assad’s regime for several months. Madaya’s 40,000 residents have resorted to eating leaves and grass to survive.
