Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer born on November 13, 1850, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the only son of Thomas Stevenson, a successful lighthouse engineer, and Margaret Balfour Stevenson. Stevenson was a frail child and suffered from various health problems throughout his life, including tuberculosis. Despite his poor health, Stevenson was an excellent student and showed a talent for writing at a young age. He studied engineering at the University of Edinburgh but dropped out to pursue a writing career. He started writing poetry, but it was his adventure novels that made him famous. His first success was the novel “Treasure Island,“ published in 1883, which was an instant hit and is still popular today. The novel is a classic adventure story about pirates, treasure maps, and shipwrecks. Stevenson continued to write and publish novels and essays, including “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“ (1886), which is a classic exploration of the duality of human nature. He also wrote several travel books based on his adventures, including “The Silverado Squatters“ (1883) and “In the South Seas“ (1896). In 1879, Stevenson married Fanny Vandegrift Osbourne, an American divorcee, and the couple traveled extensively, eventually settling in Samoa in 1890. Stevenson became ill with tuberculosis and died on December 3, 1894, at the age of 44. He is buried on Mount Vaea, near Apia, Samoa. Robert Louis Stevenson was a versatile writer and his works have had a lasting impact on literature. He is remembered for his vivid storytelling, imaginative plots, and memorable characters. Today, he is considered one of Scotland's greatest writers and his works are widely read and admired.
