I often use a similar exercise in my courses. In my opinion, it is very important to start working with the correct selection of the palette. And the basis of this is the choice of the main mix for a light and the main mix for the shadow. This exercise does not teach color mixing. But it helps to learn to think with light and shadow in color. No matter what color the object is. It is important how it is lit.
