Patient Joop is rounded up by the Germans in September 1941 and begins a long hell ride past several camps until he is liberated by the Russians. When he returns to his wife, he has become a completely different man. Joop suffers from nightmares and is incapable of ordinary human contact. Leiden professor of psychiatry Jan Bastiaans made the treatment of concentration camp syndrome his speciality. He was convinced he could cure people suffering from KZ syndrome by using LSD to make them relive horrific camp experiences. Now Do You Understand Why I’m Crying? follows about 50-year-old Patient Joop, who undergoes the controversial therapeutic treatment with LSD. Van Gasteren filmed the man in his home and at the clinic during the first two LSD sessions.
