New Caledonia has imposed a curfew until 6am Wednesday, after violent protests broke out over proposed changes to the constitution. Dozens of people have been arrested, police injured and buildings damaged, while all flights in and out of the territory have been cancelled. Madeline Lo-Booth reports the protests come ahead of a vote in the French National Assembly to change New Caledonia’s constitution, which could see more French residents able to vote in the territory. Australia’s former Consul-General to New Caledonia, Denise Fisher, tells The World's Beverley O'Connor it’s not something that’s happened just out of the blue.
