I built the model and setup the simulation layers for Weta Digital's horse asset. This involved utilising many different data resources including mocap acquisition, X-ray, CT-Scan and photography to build a working skeletal and muscle model structure with Weta Digital's proprietary FEM solving platform known as Tissue. This clip shows the progressive addition of layers required to simulate realistic-looking outer surface, from the skeleton to the muscles, fascia, fat and skin, and finally a body hair, mane and tail simulation lighting. The results of this research have been used in multiple films in place of real horses where it would be unsafe on-set for animals or to do things animals are not capable of. Tissue has won a Oscar Sci-Tech award in 2013 and continues to be used and developed at Weta Digital.
