50 years ago a legend was born, a race that remains the toughest and craziest test of a team in world sport. 17 crews set out from Portsmouth, UK, for the first Whitbread Round the World Race in September 1973. This year we celebrate a half-century of adventures, drama, unbelievable stories and spectacular images. This is a race of legendary larger-than-life characters, humans at one with nature, battling time and the elements to ride the wind as they race around the world.
