In this video, James MacDonald Watson of the Marquess of WInchester's Regiment explains the role of the ensign during the English Civil War. Carrying the company's flag or colours, ensigns would brandish them in front of their enemy to taunt and intimidate them. The colours were also the rallying point for soldiers and an ensign would be expected to die defending them.
