Mo Farah did his best to prevent the first big event of the indoor season being upstaged by the man who was not there as he set a British record for the 3,000 metres at the Aviva International Match in Glasgow on Saturday. “I knew I was in good shape but not that good,“ he said after running 7min to beat John Mayock's seven-year-old mark. It was just reward for Farah's gruelling winter regime, which has involved training camps in Kenya and Ethiopia. He said that he has taken inspiration from the work ethic of the Africans, running 120 miles a week and training twice on Christmas Day. Farah has long been the bright hope of British distance running, but was one of the biggest disappointments of the Beijing Olympics last summer, when he failed to reach the 5,000 metres final. “To break the British record is a real bonus,“ he said. “I never expected that. I've had a very good winter and it is showing.“
