Speaking to journalists after he arrived in Jerusalem, Cameron said he hoped Israel would “do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible“. Cameron also said that a “united front” was needed to impose sanctions on Iran, which “was behind so much of the malign activity” in the region. Cameron heads next to Italy where a three-day G7 Foreign Ministers summit is being held. Discussions on tensions in the Middle East, including Iran’s attack on Israel, will be high on the agenda. Iran launched a barrage of missiles and explosive drones late on April 13, a retaliatory strike that Tehran said was self-defence after the April 1 bombing of its embassy compound in Syria’s capital. Tensions have soared across the Middle East since the start of Israel’s campaign in Gaza in last October, with Israel or its ally, the United States, clashing repeatedly with Iranian-aligned groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
